August 2026
This summer’s combination of heat and humidity has been paradise for pests. For our
trees? Not so much. So we painted the trunks with a traditional lime-based whitewash.
The lime helps protect the trunks from sunscald and can also help discourage some
pests and reduce problems around the bark. It may look a little strange…but sometimes taking care of an orchard means your trees spend the summer looking like they’ve joined a mime troupe.
Our 150-tree orchard includes all kinds of fruits and nuts but regrettably few dates.
Still, we have several trees that produce Deglet Noor and Medjool varieties. They're
delicious; at least those that the birds don't get!

While our desert tortoises are generally slow movers, they get pretty frisky this time of
year. We might have goofed by letting these two frolic by themselves. I guess we'll find
out in a few months.
Our ranch skunks have it pretty good. No dumpster diving. No fast food. Just 400
acres of an all-you-can-eat, farm-to-table buffet right beneath their feet. Come tour Lost
Creek Canyon Ranch and experience our wildlife for yourself. And don’t worry…
We’ll do our very best NOT to introduce you to the skunks up close and personal.
New girl in the coop! Her egg was found abandoned on the ground, so we slipped it
under our big orange broody hen who desperately wanted to be a mom. She hatched
her. She claimed her. And now she’s informed the entire flock that everyone works
security. More chicks coming soon!
