The venerable Eldorado Country Club in Indian Wells (founded 1959) gathered up its members and joined us recently for a hike, stretch class, and two meals. Some of the participants found themselves so relaxed by the setting that they dozed off in between exercises!

Among our biggest events of the season was a fundraiser for the Bighorn Institute of Palm Desert. More than 60 people came up to enjoy the ranch, gobble down BBQ from one of our favorite restaurants (Cornerstone), and bid on a range of great items. The event put more than $25,000 into the Institute's pocket, a wonderful outcome.

Spring is a special time of year at the ranch. The days are long, the trees are in leaf, and migratory birds are everywhere. Getting up before dawn to feed our many animals has its dispensations, including spectacular vistas like this. No photo-shopping here; that's the untouched view.

Our avian population always swells in April and among our temporary visitors are these beautiful western tanagers. They're gorgeous birds, slightly larger than a sparrow, and include a vivid range of blacks, yellows, and peach. Lately they've been camping on our hummingbird feeders, evidently socking in the calories for the rest of their trip south.

On top of all the month's activities, we celebrated three birthdays among our staff. Ranch hands Oscarito and Gustavo both turned a year older this month, and mini-horse sanctuary director Jeanne did as well. The birthday cakes were yummy.
